This November we're hosting a bookdrive to benefit Book Drive for Kids, a non-profit organization that donates new and gently-used books to needy children.
Coclico’s Fall 11 collection is named after literary greats such as Capote, Hemingway, Plath and Cervantes. The collections’ connection to literature led to the idea to bring great books to children that don’t have access to them.
“Coclico’s Fall Collection pays homage to great authors and we thought what better way to promote literature then by donating books to kids who need them,” said Sandra Canselier, owner of Coclico. “We are excited to be part of Book Drive for Kids’ mission to provide books to disadvantaged children. We’re so happy that Coclico can be part of this mission.”

Coclico, the fashion-forward and eco-friendly footwear brand and Kaelen, a new label known for classic sophistication, have collaborated to create a beautiful new footwear design to complement Kaelen’s Spring 12 collection. The new style, called the Kass, will be the only shoe worn during Kaelen’s runway presentation on Saturday, September 10th during New York’s Fashion Week.

The Kass has supple nappa ties that entwine the ankle on top of a wooden platform. The versatile twists allow the wearer to create her own look from enhancing the length of the leg with an upward lacing to loose draping over the heel. Interview with Sandra in Organic Spa

Our typically press-shy founder, Sandra Canselier, opened up to Organic Spa Magazine about Coclico's origins, philosphy and being a pain in the ass (in the fondest sense).

“Green” girls who love shoes owe a lot to Sandra Canselier, founder of Coclico, for creating a line that is both fashionable and eco-friendly. Prior to Coclico, which means “Poppy” in French, there weren’t many choices for the eco-fashionista—one had to side with either eco-friendly or being on-trend, often opting for the latter. But Canselier figured out a way to make the two words appear in the same sentence without contradicting each other. While she’s quick to point out that Coclico is not a 100 percent eco line, she, with designer Lisa Nading, “totally deconstructed the idea of how you make a shoe—we looked at all the components, who makes them, and the ethical aspects of each company.” The 41-year-old French native started asking these questions five years ago, long before suppliers were used to hearing them. “We were a pain in the ass,” she admits.

But as a result, she can trace her suede back to the farmer that raised the cows, knows the ethics of her tanneries and whether or not they use the right type of chrome and dyes, uses natural full-block cork from Portugal and FSC-certified woods in her must-have clogs.

Clearly Canselier was meant to be in the business—her family owned a shoe factory for three generations. Shoes, she says, are “second nature” for her. But she didn’t immediately dive in. “When I was eighteen, I saw my dad working eighty-hour weeks, and it wasn’t really tempting.” Instead she traveled through Asia, later moved to New York City and worked as an import manager for Lalique, then repped other fashion lines. In 1997, she asked her father for a loan to start her own company. She had no business plan. “I don’t think like that. Business for me is as much the heart as the brain.” Coclico officially launched three years later, and she clearly had hit on something the market was missing: Anthropologie was one of her first retail outlets.

Today Coclico has one retail store in New York City, but Canselier is looking to expand into Brooklyn and perhaps Oakland, bringing her brand of eco-fashion to a wider client base that will appreciate the strong yet feminine styling. “Part of the reason I chose the name is that the Poppy is a strong flower but also delicate, unpretentious, and beautiful. It’s the exact mix of what I wanted to say.”

Our Mother's Day winners

We met some amazing moms during our Mother's Day shopping event. Thanks to our friends at Great Jones Spa, we got to know more about a few of them and give them some time to relax with a mani/pedi and other spa treats.

Margaret, our online winner, is a multi-media artist, wife, mother of two teens (15 and 12) two cats, one pug and 7 chickens. She was raised in Westport, CT and spent a lot of free time in New York City. Margaret loves New York for its style, diversity, crowds of people, museums, theater and dance. She cooks "Italian peasant food" out of her own organic garden and even makes her own wine!

We are proud to host a trunk show for She-bible, one of our favorite fellow eco-friendly designers. Our customers love the simplicity, wearability and philosophy of the She-bible brand. Deirdre and Stacy, the designers of the line, have a built a huge following in the west coast, specifically in San Francisco, where all the clothing is made.

On Wednesday, October 28th, stop by 275 Mott st from 4:30-8:00 pm for the trunk show. There will be champagne, snacks and 10% off the She-bible collection. The discount on She-bible will be available all weekend long!

Here's what Dierdre and Stacy have to say about the collection:

She-bible is a small company in the form of two ladies hustling and bustling to make it work. As a small team, we have the ability to make decisions we feel good about and let our brand have a conscience.

All of our garments are manufactured in small batches locally in our hometown of San Francisco. Fair labor is important to us, as is using sweatshop free factories. When you support our brand you are supporting a chain of local businesses.

Whenever we can, we source organic materials. We are currently using hemp jersey blends, hemp stretch wovens, and a 100% organic cotton twills, jerseys and fleece sourced from U.S. Mills.

The Stroll is an event to benefit The Association for Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (A.C.E.) and The SoHo Partnership.
